Karahnjukar Dam
About the place
Kárahnjúkar anchors Iceland's largest hydropower scheme and one of its most bitter environmental fights. The main wall rises 193 metres — the largest of its kind in Europe — and pens back glacial rivers to fill the vast Hálslón reservoir on a bare highland plateau. The 690-megawatt station it feeds powers an aluminium smelter on the coast, 75 kilometres away. Getting there is a long summer drive over empty tundra toward the rim of Vatnajökull.
