Karahnjukar Dam

About the place
Karahnjukar Dam is a monumental hydroelectric project in eastern Iceland. The dam blocks the glacial river Jokulsa a Dal and forms the vast Halslon reservoir. The main dam reaches a height of 193 meters, making it the largest structure of its kind in Europe. Built to supply energy to an aluminum plant, it represents the power of modern engineering. The surrounding highland landscape remains harsh and almost untouched. The access road crosses barren plateaus and offers views toward Vatnajokull glacier and deep canyons shaped by the river diversion.
