Hafrahvammagljufur Canyon

Hafrahvammagljúfur ranks among Iceland's deepest and longest canyons, cut into the eastern highlands by glacial floods of the Jökulsá á Dal. Layered volcanic walls drop over 200 metres to the water, and near the Dimmugljúfur gorge two canyons open side by side. It lies in remote high country above the Kárahnjúkar dam, on a rough summer track, and the stepped viewpoints have no barrier at the edge. The draw is the sheer scale and the emptiness.
