Studlagil Canyon

About the place
Studlagil is one of Iceland’s most unique basalt canyons, shaped by long rows of massive, geometric basalt columns running along the Jokulsa a Bru river. The dramatic contrast between dark volcanic rock and bright turquoise water creates a remarkable and memorable landscape. For many years the canyon remained little-known until the river level dropped after the construction of a hydroelectric project, revealing the full height of the basalt walls. A hiking trail leads to several viewpoints offering dramatic perspectives of the narrow canyon and its vertical basalt formations.
