Stuðlafoss

Stuðlafoss is the warm-up to Stuðlagil, and worth the stop on its own. On the east-side walk up the Jökuldalur valley toward the famous basalt canyon, the trail passes it about halfway along. The river drops over a ledge ringed by grey-brown basalt columns — the same hexagonal rock that makes Stuðlagil famous, gathered into a neat amphitheatre. The path is a wide, near-level gravel track most of the way, so many walkers pause at the falls, then carry on to the canyon rim.
