Snaedalsfoss Waterfall

Snaedalsfoss Waterfall

About the place

Snæðalsfoss, also known as Hamarsafoss, drops into the valley of the Hamarsá river along the east coast of Iceland, not far inland from the town of Djúpivogur. Rather than spreading gently, it falls in two clear steps down a rugged cliff of volcanic bedrock, plunging a total of roughly 37 metres, with a pointed peak towering directly above it. You can see the waterfall from the Ring Road, but the view is distant, so most travellers stop only briefly. To get closer, turn onto the gravel road by the bridge and bear left, then follow the track and an obvious footpath for about 1.5 km across the valley to reach the base. The terrain is uneven and there is no real infrastructure, so it suits a short detour for anyone willing to walk in for a better look.
