Auðunn's Stone & Mineral Collection

The stones here were all found in eastern Iceland, and the collection keeps to that boundary. Auðunn assembled it and he shows it himself, case by case, rather than leaving visitors to read labels. The largest gemstone found in Iceland is among the pieces on display.

Not everything is rock. Baleen from a whale found in the area is on show as well. The collection doubles as a shop, and a good share of the minerals are for sale, so a visit can end with a stone in your pocket. It is run by the family, in the village of Djúpivogur.

The collection sits in the middle of Djúpivogur, in the old bank, a couple of minutes off the Ring Road. Once you're in the village you don't need a car — it's a short walk from the harbour and the egg sculptures — though most people arrive by car on a day driving the southeast. Ring Road buses stop in Djúpivogur, and everything in the small centre is a short walk from the stop.
