Papey

Papey is a small, uninhabited island in the mouth of Berufjörður, in Iceland's Eastfjords. Its name means "friars' island", after the papar — Irish monks said to have lived here before the Norse. The island was farmed until the 1960s, but nobody lives here now. A lighthouse, a single farmhouse and a tiny timber church — often called Iceland's smallest and oldest wooden church — are all that remain. In summer the cliffs fill with puffins, fulmars and a large eider-duck colony. There is no ferry and no road; Papey is reached only by seasonal boat tours from Djúpivogur.
