Geirsstaðakirkja Turf Church

In the farmland of Hróarstunga, north-east of Egilsstaðir, stands a small church of turf, stone and dark timber, its grassy roof sloping almost to the ground. It reconstructs a church that stood here around the year 1000, in Iceland's Commonwealth age. A 1990s dig uncovered the original's foundations, a longhouse and a ring of turf wall; the new chapel was finished around 2000 and blessed. You can step inside its low, earth-walled room.
