Álfaborg

Álfaborg is a modest craggy hill in the meadows of Bakkagerði, the main village of Borgarfjörður eystri in East Iceland. In local belief it is the home of the queen of the elves, and the whole fjord is named after the rock — which is why the area calls itself Iceland's elf capital. The painter Jóhannes Kjarval, who grew up here, set an altarpiece in the village church beside the hill. A short path climbs to a view dial over the Dyrfjöll and the fjord. It is a protected nature reserve.
