Dyrfjoll Mountains

Dyrfjöll, the 'door mountains', rise to 1136 metres above Borgarfjörður eystri in East Iceland. Their signature is the Dyr, a vast notch cut clean through the ridge that looks like a doorway from miles away; local folklore makes the range the home of the Elf Queen. Below the peaks lies Stórurð, a basin of house-sized tuff boulders and turquoise pools left by a retreating glacier — the area's hiking prize, reached on a marked trail from road 94.
