Dyrfjoll Mountains

About the place
Dyrfjoll Mountains dominate the landscape of Borgarfjordur Eystri. Their massive ridge is split by a giant gate shaped rock formation known as Dyr. According to local folklore, this opening is believed to be a passage to the hidden world of elves. The highest peaks rise above 1100 meters, creating a powerful alpine panorama. At the foot of the mountains lies Storurd, a remote valley filled with huge basalt boulders and turquoise ponds. This area is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding hiking destinations in eastern Iceland.
