About the place
Stórurð — the "Giant Boulders" — ranks among East Iceland's most rewarding places you can only walk to. It is a natural bowl beneath the jagged Dyrfjöll, filled with house-sized blocks of pale rhyolite and dotted with small, bright turquoise tarns. Not a lake but a boulder field left by retreating ice, it gets its colour from glacial pools trapped between the rocks. Marked trails climb in from the Vatnsskarð and Njarðvík trailheads.
