Icelandic Wartime Museum

Reyðarfjörður was one of the busiest Allied bases in wartime Iceland — a few thousand British, later American, soldiers billeted in a fjord village of a few hundred. The museum tells that story where it happened: reconstructed rooms recreate a barracks, canteen and cinema with uniforms, weapons and hundreds of period photos, while jeeps, aircraft propellers, a gun shelter and sea mines sit on the hillside outside. Founded in the mid-1990s, it is the fullest account of the occupation years in Iceland.
