The French Museum

Fáskrúðsfjörður, a village in the Eastfjords of Iceland, was once so tied to France that its street signs are still bilingual. From the early 19th century until 1914, up to 5,000 French sailors came here each year to fish cod off the coast, and this fjord was their base. The museum fills the restored French Hospital and Doctor's House — linked by an underground tunnel — with photographs, objects and multimedia showing how young men wintered, worked and sometimes died far from home.
