Gilsarfoss

About the place
Gilsárfoss is the kind of waterfall you can step behind. It drops about 12 metres on the Gilsá river, and a ledge carries the trail in behind the curtain of water into a small cave, where part of the stream splits over the rock. The walk is easy and short: from a small parking area off the road on the east side of Fáskrúðsfjörður, a trail follows the river uphill for roughly 15 minutes, passing a few smaller cascades on the way. The path can be muddy or slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip. Most people spend half an hour or so here, enough to walk behind the falls and take in the quiet fjord-side setting.
