Hengifoss Waterfall
About the place
Hengifoss is the third-highest waterfall in Iceland, a single 128-metre drop from a cliff striped with dark basalt and bright red clay. It stands at the head of Fljótsdalur valley in the east, reached by the region's most popular hike: a steady climb from the car park that also passes the columnar basalt of Litlanesfoss. The red bands are ancient soils, baked and oxidised between prehistoric lava flows.
