Skriðuklaustur

Built in 1939 for the novelist Gunnar Gunnarsson to a design by German architect Fritz Höger, the manor was later given to the Icelandic state. Today it holds exhibitions on his life, a writers' residency and the Klausturkaffi café. In the meadow beside it lie the excavated foundations of a late-medieval Augustinian monastery, dug up between 2002 and 2012, its story of monks, healing and burial told inside.
