Therribjorg Sea Cliffs

Þerribjörg is a wall of banded rhyolite that slides straight into the sea on East Iceland's remote north-east coast. Where most of the country's shoreline is black basalt, these cliffs burn yellow, ochre, rust and red — the weathered remains of an old volcanic system. A golden cove and freestanding rock pillars line the shore below, reached only by a long walk over the Hellisheiði moor. The reward is colour, silence and almost no one else.
