Vattarnes Sea Cliffs

Vattarnes Sea Cliffs

About the place

Vattarnes is the headland separating two East Fjords, Reyðarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður. Its cliffs look across to Skrúður, an island holding one of the region's largest puffin and gannet colonies. The narrow coast road that rounds the point is a scenic drive in its own right, passing an orange lighthouse and clifftop stops above the Atlantic. In summer the ledges fill with seabirds; the rest of the year it is wind, rock and open sea.
