Muralla de Avila

About the place

The Walls of Avila are a monumental medieval fortification built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. The granite circuit stretches for more than two and a half kilometers and includes eighty eight towers and nine gates. The walls dominate the Castilian plateau with their strict geometry and exceptional state of preservation. At dusk the illuminated ramparts transform the city into a floating crown of stone above the plain. The ensemble creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere of order, strength, and silence.
