Öndverðarnes Lighthouse

Öndverðarnes is the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, a low cape of lava and grass with the Atlantic on three sides. The lighthouse is modest — an orange tower about five metres high, built in 1973 to replace an earlier light. Beside it stands the Fálki, an ancient stone well that was once the cape's only fresh water. Travellers come for the emptiness: wide horizons for whales and seabirds, and the occasional Arctic fox.
