Old Akranes Lighthouse
About the place
Two lighthouses stand side by side on Breiðin point at the tip of Akranes, West Iceland; the smaller is the elder. It was built of concrete in 1918, when concrete was still new for Icelandic lighthouses, and guided the town's fishing fleet until the taller neighbour took over in 1947. Today it is looked after locally, opened for climbing in summer and floodlit in winter. The point is windswept, and people come for the sunsets, the seabirds and the whales offshore.
