Þríhnúkagígur Volcano
About the place
Þríhnúkagígur is a dormant volcano in the lava fields near Bláfjöll, outside Reykjavík. It last erupted more than 4,000 years ago, and its magma drained away instead of hardening, leaving an intact chamber the size of a cathedral with walls streaked ochre, crimson and green. Cave explorer Árni B. Stefánsson first descended in 1974; since 2012 the Inside the Volcano tour has carried visitors down by open lift.
