Rauðhólar Craters

About the place
Rauðhólar — the Red Hills — are rootless cones. Lava crawled over a shallow lake, the trapped water flashed into steam, and rings of red scoria burst through the crust. Around 150 cones once stood here; wartime quarrying for Reykjavík's airport and roads took about half of them, and the survivors are protected today. Red gravel against green moss, ten minutes from the edge of the city.
