Álafoss Waterfall

Álafoss Waterfall

About the place

Álafoss is a small waterfall in Mosfellsbær, just off Route 1 between Reykjavík and the Golden Circle. Small as it is, its history runs deep: in 1896 farmer Björn Þorláksson harnessed the drop to run imported wool machinery, and by 1901 the mill beside it was Iceland's first motorised clothing factory. The Álafoss brand still sells lopapeysa sweaters and yarn from the shop below the falls, and Sigur Rós recorded next door in an old swimming pool turned studio.
