Árbær Open Air Museum

Árbæjarsafn began in 1957 around the old Árbær farm, whose turf-roofed farmhouse — lived in until 1948 — is the last turf farm left in Reykjavík. Over the years the city moved more than twenty historic timber houses here from the crowded centre and rebuilt them as a village square, a lane and a working farm. In summer the doors open, staff work the houses in period dress and animals graze the yards; off-season it is a quiet walk among the old timbers.
