About the place
The estate has stood at the centre of Icelandic history since the 13th century, when Snorri Sturluson farmed here. It later served the Norwegian and Danish crowns, survived a corsair raid in 1627 and housed the country's Latin school. Heads of state have lived here since 1941. The surprise is how open it all is: no perimeter fence, a free car park by the church, and sometimes the president's car pulling out of the gate.
