Viðey Island

About the place
Viðey covers 1.7 km² in the bay off Reykjavík. An Augustinian monastery held the island from 1225 until the Reformation, and the stone house of Viðeyjarstofa went up in 1755 — one of the oldest in Iceland. Richard Serra lined the western shore with pairs of basalt columns in 1990, and each autumn Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower is lit above the island. The last residents left in 1943; today it is all walking paths and seabirds.
