Hallgrimskirkja Church

Hallgrímskirkja stands at the top of Skólavörðustígur in central Reykjavík, Iceland's largest church and the city's main landmark. Guðjón Samúelsson designed its stepped facade in the 1930s after the hexagonal basalt columns left by Icelandic lava. Construction ran 41 years, from 1945 to the consecration in 1986. The church honours the 17th-century hymn poet Hallgrímur Pétursson. Inside, the white nave is plain and bright; the drama is the shape itself.
