Hallgrimskirkja Church

Hallgrimskirkja Church

About the place

Hallgrimskirkja Church is a monumental Lutheran church and one of Reykjavik’s most important architectural symbols. The design by architect Gudjon Samuelsson was inspired by Iceland’s volcanic landscapes. The stepped concrete facade echoes basalt columns formed by cooling lava, similar to those seen at Svartifoss waterfall. The interior is defined by strict minimalism, emphasizing space, light, and verticality. A 15-meter-high mechanical organ dominates the nave and is considered one of the church’s main features. A viewing platform atop the 74-meter tower offers the best panoramic views over Reykjavik and the bay.
