Sun Voyager

Sun Voyager

About the place

Sólfar, the Sun Voyager, is a stainless-steel sculpture on Reykjavík's seafront and one of the city's best-known landmarks. The shape reads as a Viking longship, but Jón Gunnar Árnason meant a 'dreamboat' — an ode to the sun and a promise of undiscovered land. It rests on a low granite base facing the bay, with Mount Esja rising across the water. People come through the day for sunrise, sunset and, in winter, the northern lights.
