Höfði House

Höfði House

About the place

The house was built in 1909 for a French consul and later became the home of the poet Einar Benediktsson. It sits apart from the city on the shore road east of the centre. In October 1986 Reagan and Gorbachev held their summit here: Iceland was neutral and mid-Atlantic, the house small enough to keep the talks intimate. The city uses it for receptions now, so a visit means the lawn outside and Mount Esja across the bay.
