Heiðmörk Nature Reserve
About the place
Heiðmörk is a forest reserve on the edge of Reykjavík, set aside for planting in 1950. Volunteers and the city's forestry association have put in more than four million trees, mostly spruce and birch. Trails cross moss-covered lava to the shore of Lake Elliðavatn, and the red Rauðhólar cones rise along the northern edge. This is the capital's nearest place for a walk in the woods.
