Torcal of Antequera Natural Reserve

About the place

Torcal of Antequera Natural Reserve is a limestone massif formed by tectonic uplift of Jurassic marine deposits. Over millions of years, water and wind erosion shaped the rocks into layered sculptural forms resembling towers and spirals. The reserve covers about 1,200 hectares with hiking trails of varying difficulty. Besides geological landmarks, the area is notable for its rich flora and mountain goat colonies. At the top of the massif, there is a visitor center and an astronomical observatory.
