Bulandshofdi View Point

The view splits in two. To the north there is open ocean, with the coastline running away in headlands and rock formations. Behind the car park the mountain Bulandshofdi rises 326 metres straight above the road, and it fills the other half of the outlook. Nothing is fenced, built up or ticketed. There is seating for fair weather and an information board with the coastline explained.

Wind is the constant condition. The point is fully exposed to the sea, and gusts are strong enough to make standing still an effort. In rain and fog the view goes entirely, and there is nothing else here to fall back on.

• No facilities. There are no toilets and no drinking water at the viewpoint or anywhere close to it.
• Wind. The point is fully exposed to the sea. Hold car doors when you open them, and keep hold of hats and phones.
• Bad weather. In rain and fog the view disappears, and the site offers nothing else to look at.
• Seating and an information board stand at the viewpoint. The benches are worth using only in dry, calm weather.
• Turnover is quick. Cars come and go, so a busy car park does not mean a long wait.

The viewpoint sits directly on the road along the north coast, west of Grundarfjörður. The car park is a few metres from the viewing spot, so there is no walk in and no trail to follow: you pull off the road, step across and look. No public transport serves the site, so it needs a car. With the parking this close, it works as a brief stop on a drive rather than a destination in itself.

Better: clear weather, when the ocean and the line of the coast are visible to the horizon.

Avoid: rain and fog.

The whole reason to stop is the long view, and there is no indoor alternative and no walk to fill the time when the cloud is down. Wind is normal here even on bright days, so a windproof jacket matters more than the temperature.
