Bjarnarfoss Waterfall

Bjarnarfoss falls in two stages of about 80 metres down a dark basalt cliff on southern Snæfellsnes, in the Búðahraun lava field left by the volcano Mælifell. Columns of hexagonal basalt border the water on both sides, and in a strong wind the upper tier is sometimes thrown back up in a plume. From the car park a matted path rises gently to a viewing platform above the coast and the small church at Búðir. The car park is free, a rarity on the peninsula, and the spot draws fewer people than the big-name Snæfellsnes falls.
