Casa Montañesa

Casa Montañesa

About the place

The Montañés House is one of the most important examples of aristocratic residential architecture in the Canary Islands from the 18th century. Here you can see characteristic inner courtyards, stone and wooden decorations, large entrance doors for loading goods, and even public stone washrooms near the entrance for coachmen. Inside the house, original decorative elements have been preserved: cornices, late 19th-century paintings, elegant wood carvings, and wooden gallery-balconies, among others. The building is located on one of the main historic streets, a key artery of the city’s old quarter, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The house was built in 1746. During the 20th century, the building deteriorated significantly; it was acquired by the Autonomous Government of the Canary Islands in 1985, subsequently restored (1985–1988, later until 1994), and now serves as the residence of the Consultative Council of the Canary Islands.
