Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna

About the place

The Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, located in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna on the island of Tenerife, is an important religious and historical site of the Canary Islands. Its history begins in 1511, when a chapel was built on this site. In 1515, it was replaced by a larger church dedicated to the Virgin of Los Remedios. In 1819, the church gained cathedral status following the creation of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The current building was constructed between 1904 and 1915 in a Neo-Gothic style with a Neoclassical façade, reconstructed in 1820. The cathedral features three naves, an ambulatory, and a dome 41.5 meters high, the tallest point in the old city. The interior houses numerous chapels, including the Chapel of the Virgin of Los Remedios, the cathedral’s main sanctuary. The cathedral is also known for its musical heritage, particularly its choral chapel, which was an important center of musical culture in the 19th century.
