Eiríksstaðir Viking Longhouse
About the place
A full-scale Viking longhouse stands in the Haukadalur valley in west Iceland, on the 10th-century farm of Erik the Red, who later settled Greenland. The sagas make it the birthplace of his son Leif, the first known European to reach North America. Hand-built from driftwood, turf and stone, it opened in 2000; guides in period dress tell the family's story and hand round settlers' tools and furs. The excavated farm foundations lie uphill.
