Eldborg Crater

About the place
Eldborg is a classic lava-spray crater that rises about 60 meters above the surrounding lava field. It has a diameter of approximately 200 meters and features steep, almost vertical walls resembling an ancient fortress. Hiking to the crater leads through a frozen sea of lava covered with gray moss. From the ridge of the "fortress," visitors can look into the deep crater and enjoy panoramic views of endless lava fields. The eruption that created Eldborg occurred around 5000–8000 years ago, and the site was mentioned in Icelandic sagas as a place of supernatural power.
