The Old Bookstore, Flateyri

Two different things share one building. One half is the bookshop: books and objects set out to be picked up and handled, chosen one at a time rather than ordered in bulk. The other half is a home kept close to its original state for more than a hundred years, and it is open to walk through. Historic memorabilia is part of the stock and part of the rooms. The shop is family-run and the owner writes as well as sells: his own book is on the shelves, and purchases are stamped by hand at the counter.

• Cards are fine — credit, debit and contactless payments are all accepted.
• Come before closing — the shop shuts in the late afternoon and does not open in the evening. A late arrival in the village means a locked door.
• The old home is part of the visit — the other half of the building is open to walk through, so leave time for more than the shelves.
• With children — children are welcome in the shop.

The Old Bookstore stands in the village of Flateyri, in the Westfjords. There is parking at the shop, and it includes a wheelchair-accessible space. The entrance is wheelchair-accessible as well, so there are no steps between the car and the door.
