Samúel Jónsson's Art Farm

About the place
Samúel Jónsson (1884–1969) farmed alone in Selárdalur, at the far end of Arnarfjörður. He took up art only in old age, entirely self-taught. Mixing concrete with beach sand, he made cartoon-like farm animals and a fountain ringed by lions copied from a postcard of the Alhambra. When the parish refused the altarpiece he had donated, he built a church of his own to house it. He is buried here; volunteers later restored the sculptures.
