Old Herring Factory in Ingolfsfjord

Old Herring Factory in Ingolfsfjord

About the place

An abandoned fishmeal and oil plant on the shore of Ingólfsfjörður, far up the Strandir coast in the north-east Westfjords. It was built in the 1940s for the herring shoals running into Húnaflói and closed for good in 1952, when the fishing failed. What is left is a hollow shell of roofless halls and rusted tanks under steep cliffs. The building is sealed, so you can only look at it from the outside.
