Hvalarfoss Waterfall

Hvalarfoss Waterfall

About the place

Hvalárfoss is the reward at the end of the F649, one of the loneliest roads in Iceland, where the Hvalá river spreads into broad cascades just before reaching the sea in Ófeigsfjörður. Only a few dozen travellers get here each year — you need a proper 4x4 and a head for river fords. A footbridge above the falls opens onto the roadless country of Strandir. The river has long been eyed for a hydro dam, but for now it runs free.
