Krossneslaug is a warm-water swimming pool on the shore of the Westfjords in Iceland, beside road 643 and about 30 km on from Djúpavík. Two small hot tubs sit next to the pool, and all of them face the open ocean. A heated building behind holds separate changing rooms for men and women, toilets and showers with hot water. The last part of the drive is dirt track, so getting here is a deliberate trip rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else.

Entrance: 1000 ISK per person as of late 2025. Payment is on an honour basis at a card terminal; cards, contactless and cash are all taken.

What makes it special

Krossneslaug is a built pool, not a natural hot spring: a rectangle of warm water at the edge of the shore, with two small hot tubs alongside. The hot tubs have no bubbles. Pool and tubs both look straight out at the open ocean, with nothing in between.

Behind the pool stands a heated changing house, kept in good order. Men and women have separate sections, the toilets are clean, the showers run hot water and body soap is provided. The shower before swimming is required. After it you step out of the door and are in the water within a few paces.

For a place this far out, the standard of upkeep is the surprise. Crowds are not a feature here.

Vehicle: the road in is a dirt track full of potholes. A 4x4 is the minimum, not an upgrade.
Shower first: a shower without a swimsuit is required before you enter the water. Changing sections are separate for men and women.

Getting there

Krossneslaug lies beside road 643, about 30 km on from Djúpavík; from Reykjavík the drive comes to roughly 335 km. The final stretch is dirt track. There is no walk at the end of it: you change inside the heated building, and from its door the water is a few steps away.

Best time to visit

Best: the snow-free months, and late in the day — the pool is open until 23:00, long after most people have driven back out.

Avoid: snow and bad weather. The track in is not one to gamble on when conditions turn.

The weather decides the drive, not the swim. The water is warm whatever the sky is doing, but the road is what determines whether the day works at all.
