Fossfjordur Waterfall

The main fall is broad rather than high. Water spreads across the rock in one wide sheet, and several smaller falls run down the slope beside it. Iceland has much taller waterfalls. This one works through width, volume and sheer proximity: it stands directly beside the road, near enough that the noise carries to the verge.

The fall is in view from either direction of travel, so it appears ahead of you long before the stopping point. The setting does much of the work. Dark basalt slopes, the fjord below, and no buildings in the frame. The whole visit happens at road level, which makes this a stop rather than a walk.

Most traffic passes without slowing.

• Private land. You cannot walk up to the waterfall. The ground below it is private and posted with no-trespassing signs.
• Stopping is improvised. There are no dedicated parking spots. Choose a place with clear sight lines both ways before you get out.
• No facilities. There are no toilets at the waterfall and no drinking water.
• Children. The site is listed as suitable for children. Viewing is from the roadside and there is nothing to climb.

There is no walk in. The waterfall is beside the road, and the visit happens from the tarmac: you stop, look, and drive on. Two stopping points give two different views. The first lot along the road faces the base of the fall, and carrying on by car brings the top into view. There is also a small pull-over on one side of the bridge for a closer look. Coming from either direction, the fall is ahead of you as you approach.
