Reykjafjardarlaug Hot Pool

Reykjafjardarlaug Hot Pool

About the place

Reykjafjardarlaug is a remarkable geothermal oasis located deep in the remote Talknafjordur, Westfjords. It consists of a large swimming pool and a natural hot tub with a stone bottom slightly above the main pool. The surrounding landscape is quiet and stark, with bare rocks, moss, and endless sea. This is an ideal alien-like landscape, where steam from the hot spring envelops the fjord’s shore, creating the feeling of being at the edge of the inhabited world. The pool was built in 1975 and has been maintained by volunteers ever since. The water in the natural hot tub is much hotter than in the main pool, and rare birds can be spotted nesting on the nearby slopes away from popular tourist trails.
