Talknafjordur Campsite

The campsite stands next to the village swimming pool. Pitch the tent first, then walk over for the pool and the hot tub. The kitchen is covered and heated and well stocked with utensils, and there is a large communal grill and a sink for washing up. Several toilet blocks are spread around the site. Two showers serve the whole campsite. A washing machine and a dryer are on site, and each use costs a fair amount. The camping area is large, with many electric hook-up points for vans. The attendant comes round to collect the fee and puts out free coffee in the morning.

Most people arrive by car. Talknafjordur lies on the fjord of the same name, in the Westfjords, and the campsite is in the village itself. Campervans park on the site among the electric hook-up points, so there is no walk in from a separate car park. The village swimming pool is next door. The hot tubs are further out, a five-minute drive up the road.

Better: late spring and early summer, before the season peaks.

Avoid: late July, if you want the place quiet.

Early May can be quiet enough that a single van has the site to itself. By the end of July this is one of the busier campsites in the Westfjords, and the two showers are shared by everyone on it.
