Gardur Old Lighthouse
About the place
The old lighthouse has guarded the northwest tip of Reykjanes since 1897: a low, square, white-and-red tower set right on the surf line. Erosion at the point eventually forced it out of service, and in 1944 the light moved to a new 28-metre tower just inland — the tallest lighthouse in Iceland. Seabirds pass the headland in a steady flow, and the two towers together draw photographers.
