Hvalsnes Church

About the place
Hvalsnes Church is a stone church built in the late 19th century. It was constructed from hand-hewn local basalt, giving it a monumental and austere appearance. The church interior features a ceiling painted to imitate a starry sky, creating a cozy atmosphere under stone vaults. The surrounding cemetery contains the tombstone of Steinndor, the young daughter of poet and priest Hadlgrímur Pjetursson. The tombstone was lost for centuries and rediscovered in 1964, adding historical significance to the site.
