Stafnes Lighthouse
About the place
A squat yellow lighthouse from 1925 stands on the low, skerry-fringed western tip of Reykjanes. The reefs offshore have wrecked ships for centuries; in 1928 the trawler Jón forseti broke up here, with fifteen of the twenty-five crew lost — a disaster that helped launch Iceland's volunteer rescue movement. The eight-metre tower is now a windswept stop on the Road 45 lighthouse loop, with eiders nesting all around in season.
