Holmsberg Lighthouse

Hólmsbergsviti proves an Icelandic lighthouse doesn't need height to hold its own. The tower dates from 1956 and stands just 9.3 metres tall, but its traffic-cone orange shows against the dark basalt cliff beneath it. Engineer Axel Sveinsson's design was cheap enough to repeat: six near-identical siblings ring the Icelandic coast. On a clear day Faxaflói opens all the way to Snæfellsnes, and seabirds work the cliff face.
